I began with a paper template that I used to cut out 4 cardboard panels. The mace, when viewed from the top, is an 8-sided star. The final piece ended up using cardboard, wood, paper, fiberglass resin, hot glue, canned spray foam, and spackle (and ended up weighing a decent amount anyways!). I ended up building a cardboard “core” that I could build upon with other materials. Not only did it have to look accurate and give the illusion of metal, it also had to not weight 100 pounds! I searched but could not find a Pepakura version of the weapon. The hanging part of the mace would prove to be the biggest challenge. I knew I could easily figure out the handle, and chain would be easy to get from a home improvement store. The trade-off is that it will likely take the least amount of time since all the major armor pieces are done for you. What would a Witch King costume be without his ridiculously large mace as seen in The Return of the King? In his iconic fight with Eowyn in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields he reveals this badass weapon (technically called a ‘flail’) consisting of a massive spiked metal mass hanging from a spiked chain. This is probably the easiest method but also the most expensive. Modified Stormtrooper - A number of vendors (both licensed and unofficial) are selling TFA kits, of varying accuracy and quality, including Phasma's variants. This method would be the hardest to get accurate since you'll be basically freehanding templates and working with materials that aren't conducive to that plate-like look. Worbla has a nubby texture so you would need to coat it in something like wood glue or epoxy in order to get it glass-like for the chrome. It may be hard to achieve the proper look using these materials. However, if you know what you are doing, this can be the most durable and professional-looking option.Įva coated in Worbla - Super expensive but easy to work with. Pep and fiberglass - Cheapest in terms of material cost, but extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive. I would appreciate any advice on the way I should build it or where I could get a kit. It all depends on what would get the best results, and would be accepted by the 501st.

Pepakura and fiberglass, Eva foam coated in Worbla or modifying a Storm trooper kit. I've thought of a few ways to make the costume. I was told that this was the best place to ask for information. At the last con I attended, I talked to some of the 501st members about either making or buying a Phasma costume. But wasn't sure I could carry off the look. I have wanted to join the 501st since my first con, and have considered saving up for a Boba Fett costume. Its made from half inch foam, which is slightly too thick to get the right look. I just about got It finished for the Battlefront midnight launch, and have since worn it to a couple of local events. Over the past month I have built a Captain Phasma costume out of EVA foam. This is my first post on TheRPF, although I've been a member of the 405th for just over a year.
